Modern Day Miracles

Webster’s defines a miracle as “an extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs” or, more simply put, an event so incredible that it can only be attributed to God.

There are numerous examples of miracles that occurred in the Bible. Jesus seemed to be routinely performing them throughout his life. He turned water into wine, caused loaves of bread and fish to multiply, and walked on water. Not to mention the most incredible of all miracles, the Resurrection. Yet, these stories are far removed from our everyday lives. Do real miracles actually occur in our current day and age? And if so, why aren’t they as well known as those during Biblical times?

A quick internet search for miracles today brings up a myriad of results, a few of which stand out. The Stigmata refers to the five Holy Wounds that have appeared to be inflicted on several saints and highly religious people throughout history. These wounds mimic the injuries caused to Jesus during the crucifixion, namely the nail marks on the wrists and feet, the side wound from the sword, and sometimes the injuries caused by the crown of thorns, scourging, and weight of the cross on the shoulder, often accompanied by pain. The wounds don’t heal, even with medical treatment, yet they’ve been reported to give off a pleasant odor. While many believe that there is some scientific or biological explanation for these wounds, their origin can not be determined. Some even say that these highly charismatic people experiencing the stigmata simply somehow inflict these injuries on themselves, or have such sympathy with the suffering of Christ that they begin to imagine the feeling of pain. Or could it be that these people, these devout followers of Christ, are actually displaying his final wounds as a sign of respect and pity for His suffering?

Several statues and paintings, particularly those of Mary, have been reported to weep blood or sometimes perfumed oils. The Church has ruled many a hoax, however, others still remain unexplained. Could these pieces of art work actually be reflecting Mary’s sorrow for current tragedies or the lack of peace in our world?

As recently as 1917, a vision of the Virgin Mary appeared to three children in Fatima, Portugal. Thousands flocked to see the apparition, and were in awe as they were able to stare directly into the sun and watch it transform and “dance” before their eyes. With the appearance of Mary came a warning and request to heed her requests for prayer and penance or face horrible punishments in the form of war and other disastrous occurrences. Could these three small children and 70,000 others have fabricated or imagined the things that they described?

Are miracles really that rare today, or is it more likely that we are quick to dismiss them with a scientific explanation or label them as “fake”? In my opinion, we’re surrounded by miraculous events, big and small. Maybe we’re just too preoccupied and untrusting to believe in them.

A Little Introduction

Hi, my name is Liz and welcome to my blog! I thought a little introduction would be appropriate for my first blog post.

I'm a 30 year old eternal optimist, born and raised in a large Irish Catholic family in Northeast Philly. The pursuit of science and further education did take me away from home for a while, but I always end up back in the Philadelphia area.

I'm currently working at GlaxoSmith Kline as a scientist in the cancer research department. I love my job, life, and friends, but am always looking for ways to make things better, which is part of the reason I've become so interested in St. Mary's parish.

When I'm not running on the hills of Manayunk or shopping at King of Prussia mall, I'm usually home hanging out with my rabbit, Lilly. Catch me on Main Street, at St. Mary's, or out in the city! Give me some ideas for blogs!

Harry Potter and Theology, Part 2.

Having briefly disposed of the chief complaints against J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books regarding the influence of the occult in my previous post, I now want to engage what I feel are some of the more interesting issues evoked by the books.

Beyond the complaints about the occult, there are another set of complaints that are typically made about Harry Potter by many Christians. They say that Harry Potter is a poor role model for young people because he is a disobedient rule-breaker. If there is a boundary set up by an authority figure, Harry will be sure to step across it. He goes into off-limits parts of the castle, breaks curfews, defies teachers and causes all sorts of mischief. Christian parents who want obedient children charge that Harry’s disobedience makes him a poor role model for young readers.

Personally, I sometimes wonder if people are so prejudiced against the books that they are looking for things not to like. But I want to take this complaint seriously and over the course of these posts, I will argue the opposite. I want to assert that Harry is an excellent role model and teaches us a valuable lesson about standing up to evil in the modern world.

It is going to be a circuitous route to get to this conclusion. I want to start by looking at the role that bureaucracy plays in the Harry Potter series, especially in the last three books. At first this struck me as a curious feature of the fantasy world which J. K. Rowling has woven for us. Despite the separation of the magical and non-magical (Muggle) human communities, wizards have adapted a similar form of government and institutional organization. The British wizarding community is governed by a Ministry of Magic complete with a Prime Minister. The Ministry of Magic is a bureaucratic institution with various agencies for carrying out its dictates and programs. There are various departments for Muggle relations, Law Enforcement and the Office of Aurors who are supposed to fight dark wizards. It even runs the newspaper, the Daily Prophet. The visits that Harry makes to Ministry of Magic give us a picture of a typical government or corporate bureaucracy. The interoffice memos may fly through the air as paper airplanes, but the power structure is not different at all. It is a picture of irrationality and inefficiency.

The role played by the Ministry of Magic increases significantly in the last three books of the series. At the end of the Goblet of Fire, the powerful dark wizard Voledmort, who has been a threatening presence in the first three books, returns to his corporal form and full magical power. Harry is witness to this event and returns to warn the wizarding community of this serious threat to their well-being. As the Order of the Phoenix opens, we find that the Ministry of Magic has not wanted to accept Harry’s warning and in fact they have waged a campaign to discredit Harry and his mentor, the head of Hogwarts School for Magic, Albus Dumbledoor. They do not want to admit that a dark wizard has come to power on their watch. Instead they opt to deny the existence of the threat.

One result of this is that Dolores Umbridge, the consummate bureaucrat, comes to Hogwarts in order to assert Ministry control there. I will have a lot to say about Dolores Umbridge in my next post.

This short film presents a lovely account of creation – storks bringing newly minted creatures down to earth. We start with a vision of cuteness – babies, puppies and kittens. The world is a beautiful place. As we ascend into the heavens, we see the creative forces represented by these cloud beings sculpting each new creation to be delivered to earth. One of these angelic clouds stands apart from the others – Gus is slightly different. He does not create puppies, babies or kittens; he sculpts sharks and rams and porcupines. His assistant, a stork named Peck, is hard pressed to deliver these dangerous creations to their place on earth.

This short reminds me of the power and diversity of creation. God creates everything – even things that are dark, dangerous and bizarre. No matter how little sense it makes to us, God loves these beings as much as he loves babies, puppies and kittens. These aspects of creation represent the fearsomeness and power of God. They are wild and dangerous. Despite this, in some way they are vestiges of God. Too often we take the world we live in for granted. We forget that it is created by God. We think that we can control the natural world so that all our experiences will be happy. This short film reminds us that the natural world reflects the wideness, diversity and fearsomeness of God’s love. We cannot control God – he is bigger than us.

Theology and Harry Potter, Part 1

Hi everyone,

I recently gave a talk at our Theology on Tap series where I approached the Harry Potter series from a Christian perspective. The talk was well received, so I thought I would do some blogging about it so that everyone else could contribute to the conversation.

There has been a lot of controversy about the Harry Potter books, so I will address some of these issues up front. I am not going to go into great detail about these controversies because I want to move on to other issues.

The biggest controversy has centered around the idea that these books feature a fantasy world which appears a lot like our own except that certain people are gifted with magical abilities. These wizards and witches have decided to hide their existence from the non-magical people, called Muggles by the wizards. The Muggle world is almost in every way like our own. Wizards live completely secluded from the Muggles with their own culture and social institutions. They actively seek to prevent any integration of the Muggle world with their own.

The complaint, mostly from evangelical Christian and conservative Catholic circles, has been that magic use is immoral and condemned by Scripture and so to encourage young children to enter into an imaginary fantasy world where magic use is normal will lead young people astray. I have not done a lot of research in this area, but here is a piece of an interview that Rowling did for NBC’s Dateline in 2003:

Katie Couric: But Rowling’s ruthlessness has come under fire. Some parents have criticized her for over-emphasizing dark themes such as death. And some religious groups have gone as far as saying the novels are potentially harmful and promote occultism.

Rowling: “I think that’s utter garbage. I absolutely do not believe in the occult, practice the occult. I’ve never… I’ve met literally thousands of children now. Not one of them has said to me you’ve really turned me on to the occult, not one of them. Now I’m convinced that if that’s what my books were doing, I would by now have met one child who would have come up to me, covered in pentagrams and said, ‘Can we you know, go and sacrifice a goat later together, will you do that with me?’ It’s never happened, funnily enough.”

I am not sure how legitimate the source of this interview is. It seems pretty convincing to me. I would like to get the actual transcript of the show from NBC before asserting that the quote is absolutely authentic. It appears that Rowling explicitly denies any interest in promoting the occult through these books. This at least establishes that the author’s intention in writing these books was not to promote the occult, but was focused elsewhere. This is in contrast to Philip Pulman’s Dark Materials Series which Pulman has explicitly written to promote atheism and attack religious belief.

For a more thorough account of this issue, I would direct anyone to John Granger’s article in Catholic Digest, his blog and his book. He seems better equipped to deal with this question than I am. There are detailed debates about the nature of the magic referenced in Harry Potter which I am not really interested in or knowledgeable about.

I am an avid reader of G. K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, all of whom wrote in the fantasy genre with Christian thematics. I think that Rowling writes in this tradition as well. I cannot discern a substantive difference in reading Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia, Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter books. If one is going to complain about Rowling, then it seems to me that one is going to have to complain about Chesterton, Lewis and Tolkien as well. This has been enough to satisfy me that there is nothing really wrong with the Harry Potter series.

That is really all I have to say about the chief complaint about the Harry Potter books. I want to move on to other objections and philosophical analysis. I will do this in future posts. Peace!

Update 1: I mentioned that some critics of Harry Potter were conservative Catholics. I do not really want to stereotype people in a mean-spirited way. I merely wanted to point out the circles from which critiques of the Harry Potter books seem to come. I will address more specific objections in future posts. I did not want to address the issue of the occult in great detail, so I am making some sweeping generalizations.

Update 2: In stating that Rowling's intention was not to promote the occult, I do not mean to say that it is impossible to promote the occult with the Harry Potter books. Certainly, other people may take the books and use them to promote the occult. But taken on their own, the books theselves are not propaganda for the occult. I hope to argue that one might use these books to promote a life of interiorized virtue at the very least. I would also suggest that one might use the Christian themes to point young people in the direction of love and sacrifice. I am not sure if this was Rowling's intention - but it is possible to interpret the texts in these ways. The texts are - like most things - open to good and bad uses.

Pride. The most despicable sin and the one sin I despise most of all, for the simple fact that it is the essence of every other sin in human nature; not to mention the reason Satan fell from Grace. Not only do I abhor it, I am fearful of it because I value God's grace and love more than anything else in life. It IS my life. When I first started walking with the Lord, I realized the danger of pride, knew I didn't want any parts of it and decided to take small steps to avoid it. "When pride comes, disgrace is soon to follow; but with humility comes respect", read Proverbs. So I asked God to remove any pride from my heart on a regular basis, started to make it a daily practice to not have any pride in my life whatsoever, for example, I made it habit to remove the word "proud" from my vocabulary and replace it with "pleased" instead, I learned to have no ego at all, to be modest, humble and generous instead of arrogant, greedy and boisterous, to be self-less instead of selfish, to consiously make an effort that nothing would interfere with my relationship with God and the work He sent me to do. My eyes were focused on the prize! The Bible says, "the wages of sin is death" - this is the reason I try with all of my might to keep myself away from sin, because to me, spiritual life IS my physical life. They are one and the same, without the one - the other is futile. Without the Father, Son & Holy Spirit as my Lifelines, the meaning of life ceases to exist, so I hold this relationship in the highest regard possible and take every sin with the utmost seriousness. Scrutinizing my every thought and action, eliminating what I have the control to freely give up and praying that the Lord replace it with something fruitful which will bring Him the Glory He deserves. I do my best to stay away from the enticements of sin in order to continue receiving God's beautiful gifts and keep the love between us flowing, so I am most effective to do His will with a clean conscience. I often pray for the forgiveness of any future sins that I have yet to commit, just to be proactive.

I hate the ugliness of sin, the shame I feel after I know I've done the evil I did not want to do, the incomprehensible sadness knowing that I've disobeyed the One Person I love more than any other and the disappointment I feel knowing that, in His sight, I've done what is evil, especially when I know better. For all of these reasons, I remain close to the Word and see every obstacle in my path as a test and an opportunity to draw close to Him. I also grade myself based on my behavior. A little obsessive compulsive perhaps but, it keeps me in line.

The past twelve months of life have been quite the test, to say the least, one that I have honestly failed miserably because of this disgusting human quality, the very one I tried so hard NOT to possess! Working seven days a week isn't healthy for anyone, but I was convinced that the work I was doing was what God wanted me to do, and I still believe this to be true. "I can do all things, through Christ who strengthens me", that phrase would get me out of bed each morning and hurry off to work. Even though I would make an effort to go to Mass on Sunday, spend what time I could in prayer, meditation and reading the Word, my body was winding down little by little and I started to get weary. When was MY life going to take off, I asked. Where's MY man, MY career, MY future, MY life! I'm taking care of and spending so much time with so many people almost 24/7, giving them all I've got but..who's taking care of me, was the posed question in my mind. "My God supplies all my needs according to His riches in glory, by Christ Jesus" the Holy Spirit reminded me.

As time went on, I started to question some more and grow even more impatient. "Lord, may I have some patience please? How do I use it and how will I know when it arrives? I am not really having fun anymore and am just growing tired, please help me out!" I knew I was waiting for something big but when would it come! That became my focus. What about all these promises I was wishing, hoping, thinking and praying for, "Beloved, above all things, I wish for you to prosper, just as your soul prospers." Well, yes - thank You Lord, I'd love to prosper too - you also promised to prosper me in the desert, remember? What exactly is Your definition of "prosper" because obviously, our views are different, won't You help me to understand?! Please Lord, do not delay" I pleaded!

Eventually, I acknowledged my impatience and requested to have it tamed by the Blood of Jesus. I was waiting on Him and I "shall NOT be disappointed." This was Written, and I know it's true, as much as I know my own name. I was counting on it.
Every day continued to remain the same as the last, but all was just as well, because I knew I was making God happy. How quickly life can change from one extreme to another...in the blink of a blind eye..and I didn't even see it coming....

The "Iron Chefs" rocked the NCA picnic at Gorgas Park. The burgers and dogs were flowing. Nobody left hungry. Special thanks go out to Kathy, JoAnne, Keith, Tom, Lee "The Burger King", Joey "The Cheese man" Lamont and Don for keeping that seat warm. It was a beautiful day.

Summer Drawing to A Close- Mary Breithaupt

As summer draws to a close, some of us are crazy enough to joyfully anticipate falling temperatures, falling leaves, and the return to routine. Summer camp, vacations, short getaways, among other summer activities begin to wind down. School supplies, football games, earlier wake up times again become a reality. I find myself writing this while we are listening to the Gospel lessons of John during our Sunday Liturgies. More specifically, in St. John’s Bread of Life discourse, we hear Jesus say that He is the living bread come down from Heaven. This brings to mind Holy Triduum of Holy Week. For ‘at the Last Supper, on the night He was betrayed, our Savior instituted the Eucharist sacrifice of His Body and Blood.’ (1 Cor 11:23-26). He did this in order to perpetuate the Sacrifice on the Cross throughout the centuries until He should come again. He has left us the Church, a memorial of His death and resurrection, the Eucharist.
As Pope John Paul II states, “To contemplate Christ involves being able to recognize Him wherever He manifests Himself, in His many forms of presence, but above all in the living Sacrament of His Body and Blood. The Church draws her life from Christ in the Eucharist.” How awesome to know that just by coming to Sunday Mass and responding whole-heartedly, singing hymns and praying together, we can feel Christ’s presence among us. But I also see how Christ manifests Himself here at St. Mary’s through the Extraordinary Ministers. These lay men and women assist by distributing Holy Communion both here at the parish and among the sick and homebound. Your continued commitment demonstrates a common vision of purpose and ministry. Thank you to all of you who are part of our Liturgical Ministries here at St. Mary’s It is our hope that everyone who reads this newsletter will be moved to fully participate in the parish!

Laura Friday on Small Groups at St. Mary's

Over three years ago I was drawn to Saint Mary’s by the overwhelming welcoming spirit of the parish community. As a new parishioner and a new resident of Philadelphia I was looking for something to make this area seem as close to my western Pennsylvania roots as possible.

One evening at Mass I asked for more information on small groups by completing a handout at the end of my pew. That single card has changed my life more than I could ever have imagined.
My Tuesday nights are now filled of laughter, love, good discussions, and friendship. My cell phone doesn’t ring, work gets put to the side, and my e-mails aren’t answered during this time. Instead, you can find me sitting around a table with multiple generations of ladies. Each woman comes from a background that is more interesting than the next and is filled with wisdom that you can only gain through living life to the fullest. Our personalities are unique, our ages are varied, and our backgrounds are different. However, we have one thing in common; we can’t wait to discuss the past week and the happenings in our latest book. I consider myself lucky to be at this table every week and couldn’t imagine my life without this group of fabulous females.

Tuesday nights are reserved for the small woman’s small faith sharing group that is run out of a parishioner’s dining room. We have a weekly reading goal and are never short for words or opinions on the topics we’ve read about. Recently, we studied a book called “The New Eve” which talked about how to live as a Christian woman. I was always amazed at the topics that we discussed and how each person’s background changed their views of the roles that women play. My personal favorite topic that we have discussed in the past is the book of Esther. Through discussion, the biblical topics that we study are often updated to today’s world and it encourages us, as women, to live as the Bible instructs. After the summer passes I am excited to start our new book, “Having a Mary Spirit” as well as looking into the book of Ruth.

Through Saint Mary’s small group I have been made to feel like I am part of a large family. I now know the dynamic stories of people who I used to consider strangers at Mass. I am now part of a group that I hope can continue for years to come. This group has helped me realize that I no longer need to search for things to make Philadelphia seem like home as it now is the place I call home. I encourage all the women of the parish to think about joining a group like the Tuesday night small woman’s group to enrich their experience as a member of this genuine parish.

Tribute to John Hughes

John Hughes, 1950-2009

"Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." – Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was and is one of the best movies I have seen. It certainly defined my late high school and early college years.

Hughes paints a picture of the life of adolescents as vacuous and inane. It is followed only by adult life which is even more vacuous and inane. We cannot completely escape from these worlds, but Hughes wants to make sure that we remember to take a “day off” every once and a while to stop and look around. Let’s make sure we do not miss the important things.

I was recently married at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish (April 18th, 2009) and my wife, Wenqi, and I decided to go to Italy for our honeymoon. When we told Fr. Jim this he suggested that we might be able to get an audience with the Pope being a newly married couple. Well, that is all I had to hear and I started to investigate if this were in fact plausible. It turns out that it is in fact plausible and any newly married couple in the Church can attend a Wednesday audience with the Pope and have a chance to kiss his ring afterwards! Summer Camp/Youth Group

Our summer camp is going very well this year. Cyndi has really put together a great program as can be seen by the numbers of children and volunteers that we have.
